Why does pattern matter?

My research began with the question “How can pattern communicate?” I started with studying about meanings of the word “pattern”. I have found out there are lots of meanings and roles that relate to pattern. The most interesting thing in pattern for me is in the narrative and the way to share stories. Pattern can be a medium that can be applied to express personal or political beliefs.

"Ornament and pattern are form-based languages — the visual articulation of ideas. When successful, it offers a good read. Its hybrid language is the aesthetic equivalent of the fast-paced and complex exchanges of our contemporary world. Pattern has shown that the qualities of line, form, shape and colour convey meaning directly without the use of words. We need only think of Arabic tile work. Their ancient patterns employ geometric shapes, forms and colours and reflect a belief in the religion and the infinity of cosmos and tell their stories through them.

I would like to generate patterns that can be multi-sensory, communicate more and interact with people to give them a new experience. At the beginning, I started exploring the relationship between pattern and sound by using "conductive ink" to explore how to connect the physical world with the digital platform and tried to make pattern become more interactive with viewers.

In a way, it was a kind of hacked pattern by trying to figure out a way of getting the interactive back into the visual languages of patterns. These experiments are not only able to perceive by seeing but to provide the multi-sensory experience to the viewers.
